Family Portrait

Xander Cobb

Connect

Nuclear family failed us queers, painfully and comically. We yap endlessly about chosen family, the commune utopia in Vermont, co-parenting, and polyamory. We U-Haul our relationships. We meet strangers seeking collective living on FB marketplace, move in, and fall in love in three months' time. Can this be the foundation of queer family? Platonic partnerships. Long distance friendship. Transient roommates. The domestic intimacy of trash day, crosswords and stoop cigs. How much do we not know about each other still? Who are we when we're alone in our bedrooms, door closed? Who makes a "happy family"? Who makes a queer family. What went down before the family photo was taken? What went down after?

With over 100 offerings – from rebellious circus, delicious dance, fearless theatre and activist art to workshops, parties, and more – Cannonball pushes the boundaries of live performance at four different venues this Fringe. Come as you are and stay past bedtime at cannonballfestival.org.

About the Artist

Xander is a choreographer, performer, teacher, and organizer. Their pathway to performance entwines competitive ski racing, studies of earth science, a passion for community organizing and a fascination with alchemizing grief. They’ve collaborated with and performed in works by Millie Heckler, Laurel Jenkins and Julian Barnett. Their work has been shown at Burlington City Arts, The Off Center for the Dramatic arts and The Flynn. Their work collages narrative, discordant dance forms, gender defiance, and unapologetically on the nose sentiments. Their current passions and inquiries include House Dance and Culture, asexual aromantic love stories, and applying improvisational dance practices to political organizing strategy. They long for a culture where dancing and singing in public are totally celebrated and everyday parts of life.
