American frontierism describes the impact of ongoing settler-colonialist practices on the American imagination. The term originated during an era of westward expansion when purportedly uncharted land lured domesticators often white and male towards opportunities for solo heroism. This dance-theater experience blends elements of spaghetti Westerns, large-scale art installations, scavenger hunts, and burlesque historical reenactments in order to examine this hypermasculine era from the perspectives of self-proclaimed, (in)famous cowgirls and showgirls. If the dirt underneath Calamity Janes fingernails could tell a story, this is what it would tell you.

Catherine (Kayt) MacMaster is a dancer, choreographer, and scholar. She spent her early career in New York City dancing with artists such as Janet Panetta, K.J. Holmes, Johanna Stevens Meyer, Julie Atlas Muz, and Bread and Puppet Theater. Her choreography investigates notions of Americana from deliberately honest and indelicately feminist points of view. It has been presented at venues including Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Dixon Place, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, MARSH and The Space Station (St. Louis), Links Hall (Chicago), and the Dagara Music and Arts Center in Medie, Ghana. She earned an MFA in Dance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she performed in works by Tere OConnor, Cynthia Oliver, and Sara Hook. Together with her collaborators, MacMaster probes for stories that have been deliberately silenced or forgotten.
