Winterreise
Fusing performance art with a classical recital, this exciting new take on Schubert’s classic song cycle Winterreise (Winter’s Journey) explores the infinite interpretations of the protagonist’s struggle with loss, self-discovery, and liberation.
Through an intersectional analysis of visual art, created both by humans and artificial intelligence, the audience is faced with the question: “What does it mean to understand and express the human experience?”. In using the emotionally charged text and music as inspiration, both the performer and two AI image generators will simultaneously produce visual artworks that aim to embody the spirit of the work.
Throughout the course of the seventy five minute work, both Bass-Baritone, Jesus Vicente Murillo, and two computers using AI technology will generate images that are spontaneously and intuitively inspired by the piece. The performer will sing all twenty-four songs of the cycle while painting 4 large canvases without any pre-conception or planning. Concurrently, image generators will produce a stream of pieces which will be displayed for the audience, but out of sight of the performer, so as not to have any influence on his work.
The juxtaposition of quantity vs. quality art production, asks the audience to evaluate the value of a human’s work and experience. Much in the way that John Henry competed against the technology that threatened to replace him, this piece is another exhibition of Man vs Machine, exploring humankind’s struggle for relevance in an increasingly mechanized world. This piece explores the question of whether there are any aspects of the human experience that Artificial Intelligence can never truly replace.
The pieces produced throughout the course of the run will be available for purchase at the conclusion of the performance schedule.
