Magic Lagoon

Karen Orrick & Dwight Dunston

Theater, Dance, Workshop, Storytelling

Stop lingering in the lagoon, lulled by the shallows. 2023. Time to tell the truth. Through movement, story, music, and clown, this duo of anti-oppression facilitators, camp counselors & former athletes brings you on a warm and sobering deep dive. Do you trust us?

Magic Lagoon asks us what ancestral lineages and current conditions can we face and transform to lay foundations for more just + easeful futures? How can we keep joy at the center of our inner revolution? What healing is possible for ourselves and our communities in this lifetime, and what must be left behind for the next generation to take on?

Take your liberation seriously and see where it goes. Hold your transformation with levity, and see which direction it flows. Breathe through your mouth. Have fun. Follow the fantastic. The depths have shadows. The shadows hold truths. In truth there is freedom. Depths are portals to freedom. We are being called to step forward! We are scared. We are powerful. We are alive.

Cannonball, produced by Almanac Dance Circus Theatre, is the first and largest independent festival hub of the Philadelphia Fringe that presents risk-taking independent artists in back-to-back performances next to delicious lounge spaces, fostering creative collisions and community conversation.

About the Artist

Dwight Dunston aka Sterling Duns is a West Philly-based facilitator, hip-hop artist, educator, and activist who has brought his creativity, care, and compassion to schools, community centers, coalitions, retirement homes, festivals, and stadiums all over the country and internationally. He has shared the stage with Jonathan Kozol, Michelle Alexander, Questlove, members of Wu-Tang, and others. In this season, he is learning to amplify his joy and learn from his grief and is actively practicing reverence.

Karen Orrick is a social change facilitator, performer, dancer, and clown who’s studied with Headlong Performance Institute, Pig Iron, Donna Oblongata, and at a number of modern, improvisational, and acro-inspired dance studios in Philadelphia. She’s interested in how people get set up to play oppressor roles and pathways to reconnection and healing. She believes in the power of play, presence, and vulnerability to build connections, crack open portals, and create new possibilities.
