Magic Trash Day: Down in the Dumps

Rough & Tumble Productions

Theater, Immersive/Interactive Experience, Art for Young Audiences (Kids Fringe)

Connect

“Magic Trash Day” is an interactive performance created for and with Philadelphia youth focused on differentiation and acceptance of difficult emotions, such as grief, loss, and longing.

The story follows a kid who finds a magic piece of trash that helps them metabolize their feelings around loss, longing, and sadness. The creative process includes story-sharing and trash art making workshops with youth in Philadelphia, in which the theater creators transform their images, stories, and characters into the exciting world and story of Magic Trash Day.

Magic Trash Day is premiering at the Liberty Lands Amphitheater as part of the Theater for Youth Performance track of the Cannonball Festival. Directed by Lillian Ransijn and Dylan Smythe of Rough & Tumble Productions, Costume and installation design by trash artist and dancer Mehgan Abdel-Moneim, and performances by Mehgan Abdel-Moneim, Marsell Anhel Chavarria, and Bellisant Corcoran-Mathe.  Join us as we find treasure within ourselves and amongst the trash.

Cannonball, produced by Almanac Dance Circus Theatre, is the first and largest independent festival hub of the Philadelphia Fringe that presents risk-taking independent artists in back-to-back performances next to delicious lounge spaces, fostering creative collisions and community conversation.

About the Artist

Rough & Tumble Productions is an interdisciplinary ensemble dedicated to presenting original, honest, highly-physical work. Our performances, workshops, and advocacy initiatives give voice to emotions and experiences that are often suppressed in the dominant American culture, including grief, ambiguous loss, shame, sexuality, rage, and longing, inviting others into a space of awareness and acceptance. Through ensemble collaboration and the power of the performer-audience connection we offer a pathway to integrating these vulnerable, essential parts of ourselves and our human experience.
