As an artist who was always in transit, by decision, it was an important shift in my life when gradually the power I had on making decisions on motion decreased and dispersed. Moved to the US from Turkey in 2021, right after the pandemic, then found myself in a research of different ways of learning/unlearning, observing, evaluating, dynamics of motion.. Differences and similarities of defect, displacement, exile, wander, errantry, space/place, habits and engraved paths, behavioral patterns and survival tactics. Political power dynamics within/between/among motion, while watching my country slowly fade away. My decision to move to another country slowly transformed into seeking asylum. What happens when you just can’t go back?
My practice offers errantry, an idea offered by Edouard Glissant, as a practice that seeks sovereignty in all aspects of motion; space, force, direction, relation.
By continuously re-positioning oneself in relation, how can we move towards new ethical ways of negotiating place and energy ?
Errantry is observation, a self-reflection, a poke, a nudge. Errantry is finding ways to become proximal with yourself to be able to become closer to the Other. Errantry is practicing an other, through a ‘poethical’ relationing.
I am practicing errantry in my relation to space and place, my relation to concepts and values, knowledge, and to movement. How I position myself in situations or in places/sites, how I perceive and create strategies, how I use my energy and effort. A question to phenomenology and epistemology.
Errantry can offer fields of transit, thresholds of potentialities for transformation/transmission by integrating forms of movement and reflective practices. And errantry is the in between, errantry is the trans-.
