What happens when something you love goes up in flames? Do you snap to attention? Do you hide under a rock and wait for it all to be over? Or do you lean into your creativity and humor to get you through - and inspire others to do the same? Based on her own true account, The Carport is a playful, absurd, multi-character account of navigating a project management nightmare here in Philadelphia. For The Carport Jennifer Blaine employs her signature humor, absurdity, and original song, to help us discover more resilience, joy, and greater kindness for ourselves and others amidst the burning embers of our world.

Philly Fringe favorite Jennifer Blaine has appeared in most of the Philly Fringes since its inception in 1997, and has devised 20 solo shows. Jennifer considers her Philadelphia audiences to be a key co-creator in her shows. Her shows are interactive, inspiring, funny, and moving. TimeOut New York once said about her -- "accomplished playwright and nimble actress Jennifer Blaine keeps her show funny and touching throughout." She will have some collaborators on board such as Emmett Drueding for live musical accompaniment, Naila Francis for poetic alchemy, Channing Billups for imagery, and Laura Deutch from Philly Cam to record the magic of this dynamic storytelling.

Jennifer wishes she could reveal more about this show, but she is still creating it right now! So come to the show to see what it’s all about! This show is a world premiere and the venue, Mister John’s Music is quite intimate, so be sure to get your tickets now!

About the Artist

JENNIFER BLAINE has been creating and performing one-woman shows for 30 years. Her original writing, performing, and comedy delve into serious and socially relevant issues and give audiences the opportunity to unite in laughter. She is passionate about creativity, and lets you in on her creative process so you can be let in on yours. Jennifer has opened for George Carlin and according to the Philadelphia Daily News “her comic genius is like Lily Tomlin and Tracey Ullman.” She was the resident Theatre Teaching Artist at The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts from 2013-2018, where she created original plays on topical issues, from bullying to civil rights. Jennifer produced the “5, 000 Women” festival, showcasing women artists and social activists, at The Center for the Arts at Wesleyan University in 2011 and 2012 and in Philadelphia in 2014. Some of her 20 solo shows include Sorry (why women can’t stop apologizing for their existence), White Flight (growing up in Brooklyn, NY), and Ridiculous (how to overthrow the patriarchy once and for all). Her play Dirty Joke, about women activists (directed by Vashti Dubois, founder of The Colored Girls Museum), was featured at the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts, and at The Annenberg Center for the Arts. The Vicissitudes of Travel, which depicts a family traveling through a brain surgery, is performed in art galleries, museums, theatres, Wesleyan University, Tufts Medical School, and at Jefferson Medical College which brought together medical staff and the general public to dialogue about loss and illness. Her solo musical Mannequin, about a defunct fur store in South Philly, its elderly Jewish owner, a teenager, a mafioso, and a political activist, explores whether we can truly be inclusive, despite the rise of intolerance and white nationalism since the U.S. 2016 election. Her “Getting Creative” series is a TRANSFORMATIVE PERFORMANCE where Jennifer assists you to deepen your connection to your CREATIVITY.
