This work unearths memory while investigating a side of queer childhood that is often unacknowledged. Queer childhood here as an early self recognition of a potent sense of otherness, an acknowledgement of one’s failure to meet the social and parental standards implemented in adolescence. The research of this work is a reminder that queer children need care, not just for the child but for their felt and lived experiences. It serves as a requiem for the past, a memorial for the ineffably queer experiences lived from childhood to adulthood. I'm interested in gestural reenactment as a way of storytelling through the lens of a queer child. This work is for both my inner child and past versions of myself, holding them tenderly because they are the center of this deeply rooted and quite vulnerable research. Do we consider children with unwarranted hyperactive imaginations due to trauma as a subordinate other? This work takes place within different dates and temporal spaces. The intended audience for this piece is anyone willing to witness and be confronted with the uncomfortable. I aim to evoke something out of audience members similar to that of a calling-out, any references to any person or scenario are intentional. I am motivated by the thought of my art making an impact– remembered. The themes explored in this work include phenomenological storytelling through gestural reenactment of lived experiences & dreams– dreams as lived experiences. What do we choose to do with a lived experience? Where in the body does it feel the most real? I aim to confront these questions with urgency in reimagining the present and laying ghosts of the past to rest.

About the Artist

evie bondon is a Latinx movement artist from Kansas City, Missouri, currently residing on the land of the Western Abenaki, also known as Vermont. Influenced by the body’s memory of lived experience, her work investigates the ineffable, deviant ideologies that exist in liminal spaces through the use of experimental performance art, choreography, and filmmaking. She recently received her BFA in dance at Bennington College after formerly attending the University of the Arts in Philadelphia the last three years, both under the direction of Donna Faye Burchfield. She has performed in works by Tommie-Waheed Evans and Katie Swords Thurman, Sara Procopio and Sidra Bell, Netta Yerushalmy, Paul Matteson, and Curt Haworth among others. evie aims to provoke the boundaries within performance for audiences while blending relevant elements of media, nostalgia, and cultural identity into her work.
