WITS is a musical that explores the anxieties of two groups of Black folks at the cusp of adulthood, segregated from one another along class lines. As their disquiet reaches a fever pitch brought on by their encounters with racial subjugation and classism, they are offered an escape from the crippling limitations of society: an opportunity to travel the stars with an extraterrestrial being. This dynamic, dance-driven narrative invites audiences to bear witness to a depth of soul and spirit that characterizes so many Black people in vibrant communities of color. The fears, hopes, and dreams of these young Black artists soar through an infectious, otherworldly pop score, revealing a tomorrow of possibility and promise, their futures written in the stars.
InnissENT is the twin brother artist collective Charles & Christopher Inniss. They are writers, musical theater composers, filmmakers and storytellers dedicated to crafting narratives on the Black experience. Their work has been featured domestically and abroad. In 2023, WITS was workshopped at the Polyphone New Works Festival in Philadelphia. In 2022, InnissENT was the winner of the Keep Soul Alive microgrant, as well as a finalist for the I AM SOUL residency, each with National Black Theater in Harlem, New York. That same year, WITS received a writers residency at Catwalk institute in Catskill New York to develop the writing of WITS. Individually, Charles is a 2021 National Musical Theater Conference semifinalist.
