Edu Díaz on Irene Foley-Chort

A smiling woman in heart-shaped glasses is surrounded by roses, crystals, and sparkling hearts in a magical forest, while a performer and a distant figure add to the dreamlike scene.Dear Irene,

Are you a shaman of the heart?

At different moments during Who Do You Think You Are?, I wondered whether I was watching a show, attending Mass, being abducted by a cult, or experiencing an ayahuasca trip.

Possibly all of the above.

I was fascinated by the total commitment to your world: the church, the hearts, the glasses, the pen, the merch, the fan. It felt less like a show and more like a sensory journey or ritual. And then, just when everything seemed at its most surreal, you brought us back to very real pain.

You spoke about being loud with intention, and that stayed with me. Your voice filled every wall of the church. The shouting and singing felt like pain being released, unapologetically, while still reaching toward hope. At times, it felt almost ancestral.

I left not entirely sure what I had experienced. This might be the fringiest experience I have ever had in all my Fringes. And I’ve been to many.

But I did leave with this: life happens for you, not to you.

And, if you’re lucky, you may also leave with a pineapple.

With love,

Edu
