Overview

Caleb, a nervous clowncrobat, wants to give the performance of a lifetime by accounting for and controlling every variable to guarantee the best possible outcome. As they carefully put all the external factors in place, we realize the one variable they’re having trouble controlling is their own emotional response to the pressures of performing. After all, art is only good, valid, and worthy of being shared if it’s absolutely perfect……. right? Featuring clown, juggling, hand balance, and aerial straps, this show gives us a behind the scenes look at how tough making art is.

Cannonball, produced by Almanac Dance Circus Theatre, is the first and largest independent festival hub of the Philadelphia Fringe that presents risk-taking independent artists in back-to-back performances next to delicious lounge spaces, fostering creative collisions and community conversation.

About the Artist

squid is a storyteller and multi-disciplinary artist who specializes in connecting with people.
A self-described clowncrobat, squid believes in using the awe-inspiring “impossible” nature of circus physicality to explore deep emotions and difficult situations. They were first introduced to circus in southern Brasil, where they trained under third-generation circus artist Lucas Chavarria, and now continue his lineage as a straps artist and hand balancer based in Chicago. squid is interested in the grey areas between play and technique, juxtaposing the challenging physical and mental discipline of straps and hand balance with the visceral vulnerability of clown. They know that in life and in hand balance the straightest line is often the easiest… But the squiggly line is usually more fun.
