Queerano, or A Very Great Mischief

Overview

It is 1921, and Lord Thurston believes it would be “a very great mischief” to inform women that queerness is not only a male pastime – little does he know his daughter, Roxane, has already given her heart to a Miss Christine Granville. Or… has she?

Antony is hopelessly in love with Roxane. Roxane is in love with Christine – but a false Christine, comprised entirely of letters Cyrene wrote, and the way that Antony looks in a dress. Christine – the real one – is in love with no one, as far as anyone can tell, and Lewis is in love with the real Antony, but also the false Christine Antony, and apparently can’t tell the difference.

And Cyrene, the poor fool, believes Roxane traded her skirts for breeches, just to climb into the heavens and paint the stars herself.

This sapphic, high-comedy adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac is written by trans playwright Laura Anthony and inspired by the true story of a resolution to add “acts of indecency by females” to then already-extant buggery laws of Great Britain. A comedy of errors jam-packed with crossdressing, longing, and queerness, QUEERANO, OR A VERY GREAT MISCHIEF has delighted audiences in NYC, New Zealand, the UK, and beyond.

About the Artist

Wolfsmouth Players Company (WPC) is an ensemble company dedicated to developing new work. We empower playwrights, directors, actors, and designers to pursue unique, honest, and important work, particularly around the idea of theatre as political activism. Our leadership is majority trans/nonbinary and our work is often presented through a queer lens.

Since our inception in 2021, we have produced five fully staged original works and one staged reading. WPC has been presented by multiple venues and festivals, including The Tank NYC, WP Theater, and New Zealand Fringe Festival. Previous shows include: Effigy, Minutemen, and The Valley of the Shadow. 

The Wolfsmouth Players Company acknowledges the Native Peoples on whose ancestral land we gather to work and perform, as well as the vibrant native communities who make their home here today. We do not have a home theatre, but the locations in which we work are built on the traditional homelands of the Munsee Lenape and Wappinger peoples, who have an enduring relationship with the land despite forcible displacement and dispossession by European colonization.
