In its exploration of the need for belonging within a microcosm, Into Outside seeks to illuminate the profound interdependence between individuals and society, emphasizing both the individual’s impact on society and society’s capacity to enact change. Each person not only comprises society but also nourishes it through their contributions and interactions. Conversely, society exerts a profound influence on every individual, shaping their character, defining their roles, and influencing their needs and aspirations. By recognizing the reciprocal relationship between individuals and society.
“We are six men going to ask one man what he means.” — “I think it is a bit queerer than that,” said Syme. “I think it is six men going to ask one man what they mean.”
An experimental response to The Man Who Was Thursday, GK Chesterton’s turn-of-the-century metaphysical thriller, this performance follows Detective Syme, alias Thursday, in her pursuit of a powerful trickster, known only as Sunday. Along the way, she is derailed by the cops inside her head (who may or may not be reincarnations of the Anarchist Exclusion Act of the early 1900s). With her world upended and her allegiances questioned, she becomes increasingly bent on detangling Sunday’s celestial antics. A queer, anarchic romp, Thursday: a fantasia of days fuses bold design, physical theater, audience interaction and original music.
Cannonball, produced by Almanac Dance Circus Theatre, is the first and largest independent festival hub of the Philadelphia Fringe that presents risk-taking independent artists in back-to-back performances next to delicious lounge spaces, fostering creative collisions and community conversation.
Learn MoreShiyu Wang is a dancer, choreographer and teacher from China. Shiyu graduated with her BFA in Dance from Minzu University of China in 2019. Before coming to Philadelphia, Shiyu taught Chinese classical dance and Folk dance in China. She also participated in the exchange activity of the African Dance Troupe at the MUC in 2019 and was a part of CCTV’s recording of the column show of “Dance World” in 2018. Shiyu won 3rd Prize in the 9th Modern Dance Competition among 5 provinces of North China in 2019. Right now, she is pursuing her MFA in dance at Temple University. Her work was selected for the ACDA in 2021, and her graduation work was awarded a project grant from Temple University in 2022. Shiyu joined Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers as an apprentice in 2021. Following the dance company to participate in all performances of the 2021-2022 season, Shiyu confirmed her love for the stage. Shiyu believes that the body is the dancer's home and the body is the stage for us to perceive the world, so dance is always a dialogue. A dialogue between our bodies and the space, the audience and the people we are dancing with.
The Paper Architects Collective was founded by Erin Amlicke, Marlena Ospina, and Lillian White in 2023, in Lima and NYC. We delight and challenge audiences with new work crafted from a foundation of individual inquiry, training and research. Our work exists at the intersection of the participatory, local, and political and we use this space to rehearse for a more loving, equitable future. We are playmakers, music makers and troublemakers who are at home performing on both the street and the stage. Erin Amlicke is a playwright and actor with credits in NYC and regional houses, Marlena Ospina is a Brooklyn-based performer, clown, and musician, and Lillian White is a director and solo performer from the US, currently based in Peru. Thursday: a fantasia of days is our first performance as a collective.
