Overview

Unknowns is a collaboration between choreographer Darcy Lyons and visual artist Ivia Sky Yavelow. Accompanied by a live music score by Jesse Sparhawk playing harp, electric, bass, and pedal steel guitar. Dancers interact with an installation of soft sculptures that represent unknowns in ourselves, others, and the outside world. The sculptures and dancers react to each other, exploring changing relationships to the unknowns- an exploration that asks specific questions about unknowns as well as delving into the unknown as a general concept.

Rest Intervention champions the anti-hustle! Valuing rest as research, we offer a fringe-friendly gathering that invites-but-does-not-demand audience participation. What are your sense memories and strategies for recuperation? What stories and/or practices are conjured for you in recollecting experiences of well being and decompression? Rest Intervention includes a cozy corner, conversation, and opportunities to witness each other to stimulate non-productivity, self-care, and a shared practice of rest. This is a curated moment to rest and restore. Informed by a recent, shared residency at Subcircle, Rest Intervention features performances of seeing and unseeing, rest and its partner restlessness, sensorial tracking, and embodied remembrances by Aura and Christy. Rest Intervention offers a moment to pause and to be with.

About the Artist

Darcy Lyons was born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She received a B.F.A in dance from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in 2010 and has since been living, working, performing, and creating dance work in Philadelphia. She has produced the following shows: Proceed with Caution 2019 and 2018, Pendulum 2018, ASKEW 2017, Bricolage 2017, Patchworks 2016, WALLS 2015, and MAEI MAEI AEIM 2013.

Ivia Sky Yavelow is an artist and curator based in central New Jersey. Her works range from small drawings to large installations, and are made with both found and fine art materials. Starting with process based creation and inspired by cycles of creation & destruction, clarity & confusion, her works ask: "What does not knowing look like?". Yavelow graduated from Bard College in 2014 and also studied at the New York Studio School. She has exhibited in the Philadelphia area since 2010.

Aura Fischbeck Dance (since 2008) creates performance events which investigate and communicate the body's intelligence and reflect the complexity of a contemporary human experience. A Philadelphia native, she is currently based in San Francisco. Their work has been presented nationally. Aura recently completed an MFA in dance from the University of the Arts (Philadelphia). She has had the great pleasure to be in conversation and collaboration with Christy Funsch since 2008.

Christy Funsch formed Funsch Dance in 2002 and has since been presented nationally and internationally. She holds an MFA and a Laban Movement Analysis Certification and has taught throughout the U.S. and in Amsterdam, Lisbon, and Vienna. Christy has been mentored by Tere O’Connor, named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch,” and, in 2019, she was a Fulbright Scholar at Lisbon’s Escola Superior de Dança. She has been in collaborative conversation with Aura Fischbeck since 2008.
