Overview

Songwriter and sound artist Dylan Gilbert is a recent Philadelphia transplant who has spent the last two decades performing and releasing work that challenges preconceived notions about live performance and genre.

WHEN DID EVERYTHING CHANGE celebrates the release of Gilberts new art rock inspired album of the same name. The album is the final installment of a trilogy of albums that began with the experimental-electronic ILL BE THE LAKEBED in 2020, and continued with the drone and folk inspired SPIRIT BREEZE in 2022.

This solo performance weaves each of these sonic worlds together, using elements of theater, film and dance to explore themes of loss, grief, love, politics, and spirituality in an ever-changing, often terrifying, modern world.

Through this performance the artist hopes to strip away performative baggage and dependency on modern technology to re-discover their self amongst the noise.

About the Artist

Dylan Gilbert (he/him/they/them) is an American songwriter, producer, and sound artist from Charlotte, North Carolina, currently based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His sound draws from Art Rock, 60s Pop, Experimental Music, and Free Improvisation.In the early 2000s, Gilbert began his career by self-releasing a string of solo albums and touring extensively before founding genre-bending punk band Hectorina in 2012. The band released multiple projects through 2021, including a theatrical production of their rock opera Collywobble, written and directed by Gilbert.In addition to his own work, Gilbert has been a prolific collaborator. He has written original scores for film, theater, podcasts, video games, and live dance, including multiple projects with dancer/choreographer Sarah Ingel. In 2016, as an artist-in-residence at Goodyear Arts, Gilbert built an interactive sound installation called The Forest and produced All the Dogs and Horses, a zen acid western play, with XOXO Performance Ensemble. Throughout the 2010s, Gilbert studied Music Therapy and Psychology at Queens University and worked as a music instructor, director, and curator in the Charlotte area and beyond.Since 2020, Gilbert has released two solo albums, blending elements of Ambient Pop, Psychedelic Folk, Electronica, and Drone music into his own eclectic sound: Ill Be the Lakebed (2020) and Spirit Breeze (2022). As of 2024, he continues to release solo work while composing and producing music as a freelance artist. Gilbert's 13th solo album, the Rock inspired When Did Everything Change?, will be released on Aug 30th 2024 through North Carolina's Potluck Foundation.
