About the Artist

AniMalayaWorks is a family-centered, intergenerational, multimodal, cross-cultural, socio-political dance theater collective. This collaboration was originally led by mother-daughter duo Anito Gavino and Malaya Ulan, but has since expanded into a collective of artists from the Global South. Anito is a Filipino immigrant embodied scholar, a 2025 Dance USA fellow, a three-time recipient of the MAPfund grant, a 2021 Leeway Transformation Award recipient, a recipient of the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Velocity Fund, NEFA National Theater Project, and the director of AniMalayaWorks. Malaya is the 2024-25 Youth Poet Laureate of Philadelphia, the current Youth Poet Laureate of the Northeast Region, and a TEDxPenn 2025 speaker and the co-founder and playwright of AniMalayaWorks. Pedro González is a Cuban multi-instrumentalist, composer, music arranger, singer-songwriter, music producer, tap dancer, a Cuban Music and Dance educator and is the music director of AniMalayaWorks. Through collaboration, they invite artists from wherever they perform to participate and co-create, allowing the performance to morph into a more dynamic, ever-evolving storytelling practice.
