About the Artist

Broken Leg Dance Company began as a group of friends who love dancing, performing, and telling stories. As friends,  they have inspired, respected, and learned from each other. In coming together, they established a place where they could enjoy the process of creating, rehearsing, and performing their art. The ability to create art and share it with others is a privilege; the members of Broken Leg Dance Company intend to extend their love of dance and dancing with each other to the rest of the community. Every dancer brings years of training,  technique, unique talent, personality, and experience to the stage, connecting to the community through a strong sense of character, authenticity, artistry, and passion.

Broken Leg Dance Company's Performances are reminiscent of theater, with an overarching story or theme that incorporates elements of many different styles of dance to showcase aspects of humanity such as humor, celebration, grief, joy, self-doubt, love, and pain. Every time the dancers take the stage, they not only share the skill they have cultivated over years of training and preparation, but also parts of the people they are, their experiences, and their emotions with the community.

Director and Choreographer, Joanna Eyre, is local to the Philadelphia area and grew up with a family that has strong roots in musical theater and performing arts. She began ballet classes at the age of three at Metropolitan Ballet Company, where she studied until the age of sixteen. Taking a break from Pre-Professional Ballet, Joanna pursued colorguard, completing her colorguard performance career with a World Championship title and completing her age out with Drum Corps International. Joanna returned to dancing at UArts, leaving after one year to train at Koresh School of Dance. She performs with Melissa Rector's Company, Melissa Rector Danceworks.
