About the Artist

Justin Jain is a Philadelphia-based, queer, Filipinx Artist and Educator that works in sculptural ceramics, theatre, and performance. Their work wrestles with first-generation immigrant narratives, Philadelphia LGBTQ+ histories, and Filipino / American ancestry. With over 25 years in professional theatre and dance, his visual art carries a dramatic (and sometimes ironic) flair, often capturing movement in static ceramic forms. His ceramic sculptures, whether the more literal figure poses or abstract vessels, consciously incorporate exaggerated gesture, asymmetry, and negative space to capture essences of minority-depression: overwhelm, emptiness, and imbalance. Jain also embraces a process-oriented, maximalist approach—going deep with ideas to uncover nuance and pleasure through experimentation, what they refer to as their modality for queering narratives and forms. He draws inspiration from boundary-pushing artists like Bertolt Brecht, Young Jean Lee, Ai Weiwei, and Roberto Lugo. In 2023, Broad Street Review described his performance work as “exhilarating, emotionally intimate, deeply personal, universally relatable, and refreshingly modern.” Jain’s current work explores the intersection of performance and ceramics by interrogating the “performative object” and conversely playing with fired and raw clay onstage in experimental and theatrical ways.
