What happens when the relationship ends but the responsibility doesn't?
Custody is a one-man dramedy written by Philadelphia playwright Derrell Lawrence, directed by Damien J. Wallace, and performed by actor/comedian Craig McLaren. The play follows a father's fierce and emotional fight to stay present in his son's life after a relationship falls apart, navigating courtrooms, custody agreements, birthday parties, and little league sidelines while trying to hold himself together.
McLaren is a force of nature on stage, inhabiting 14 distinct characters with humor, heart, and honesty. He pulls the audience into every side of the story: the family members, the friends with opinions, and the moments alone when no one is watching. What emerges is a portrait of co-parenting that is messy, funny, painful, and deeply human.
Custody speaks to anyone who has ever loved a child more than they knew how to love another person. It is a love letter to fathers who show up, and an honest look at what it really takes to keep showing up when the system, the circumstances, and the heartbreak are working against you.
