EVE IN PARADISE is a one-person play. It is a loose stage adaptation of John Milton’s Paradise Lost, a pointed commentary on Paradise Lost, and at its core, a memoir. The actor plays Eve. She is a biblical troublemaker, a seventeenth century puritanical ideal, and a 21st century intersectional feminist, who has lost her faith. The audience finds Eve embodying the epic poem and cutting it with scenes from her own life. As she grapples with Milton’s text, she shares her journey as a child of the catechism, a questioning teenager, and an adult who strives to find the beauty in this broken world, not in God, but in humanity, discovering a kind of fulfilling spirituality that is not tied to organized religion. Humor and key musical moments accompany audiences on the journey, one that is freeing, even as the loss of religious comfort is deeply felt.

Some of the content is mature, including discussions of death, abortion, police brutality, the prison industrial complex, murder, racism, homophobia, transphobia, and genocide. Parental guidance is advised.

Parking in this area is a challenge. Carpooling and/or public transportation are recommended.

The audience seats are pews. BYO cushion. The venue is fully ADA accessible. However, since the audience seats are immovable pews, wheelchair seating is limited. Please feel free to contact FringeArts with questions.
