Experience a bold theatrical adaptation of one of Japan’s most powerful war novels: Ōoka Shōhei’s classic Fires on the Plain reimagined for the stage. This solo performance brings to life the harrowing journey of a soldier lost in the chaos of World War II. Through multiple roles, one actor explores the depths of war, solitude, and human survival. Explores themes of faith, dignity and humanity through the loneliness, hunger and moral dilemma of the Philippine front. A visceral, intimate take on Ooka’s classic, confronting the darkness of war with haunting clarity.

About the Artist

Setagaya-Silk was founded 2008. The company’s work features ‘art with humour, ’ blending dialogue, mime, dance, and installation art. The company’s goal is to inspire small realisations in everyday life, nurturing imagination and enriching life with joy and depth. The company uses a perspective-based approach, avoiding elaborate sets and instead making use of what already exists in the space.

The company’s directing method places strong emphasis on ma – a concept central to Japanese culture. Ma refers to the blank or quiet spaces between things in time and space. It’s not the absence of something, but rather a space where something lives. Deeply rooted in Japanese sensibility and aesthetics, ma helps create emotional and spatial resonance.

Recently, Setagaya-Silk has been focusing on Japanese culture and social issues. The company have not yet had a performance abroad, but hopes to tour internationally in the near future, in order to we want to share concerns and ideas with global audiences and inspire interest in Japanese culture.
