About the Artist

MISSION
LSDC makes dances to honor the individual, the collective, and to enliven a sense of place. LSDC collaborates with artists of multiple disciplines and perspectives to investigate the intersections between body, sound and site. The Art Room Studio is a creative branch of LSDC, acting as a home to a vibrant community of artists in Philadelphia dedicated to making, supporting and sharing creative practice, research and performance.

Leah Stein:
Dancer, choreographer, educator Leah Stein creates collaborative site-specific performance projects including large choral dance works as well as intimate small-scale movement works. An avid improviser, she founded Leah Stein Dance Company in 2001 in Philadelphia. Her site-specific projects have been performed throughout the region, nationally and internationally in Japan, Scotland, Romania, Indonesia, and Poland in train garages, open fields, vacant city lots, gardens, burial grounds and numerous historic sites.Her collaborations with Alan Harler of the Mendelssohn Chorus included large scale works for chorus and dance and commissioned scores by David Land, Byron Au Yong and Pauline Oliveros. A 2018 Pew Fellow, Leah has received numerous grants and awards including a 2019 MacDowell Fellowship supporting her ongoing collaborations with composers, musicians and poets. Leah engaged in a yearlong research project with composer Pauline Oliveros to deepen her exploration of Pauline’s Deep Listening practice with singers and dancers. This research is the foundation of Leah’s current teaching, practice and performance. She co-directs the Art Room Studio in South Philly in support of experimental performance works by and for local artists.
