Human In The Loop

Don Allen

Performance Art, Solo Show, Storytelling & Spoken Word, Theater

Connect

A solo theatrical work about identity, collapse, memory, performance, and rebuilding meaning when reality stops making sense.

Blending autobiographical storytelling, theatrical sound design, projected media, comedy, emotional excavation, and live interaction with AI systems, the piece follows a performer navigating institutional breakdown, grief, creative reinvention, and the strange psychological terrain of trying to remain human inside increasingly fragmented systems.

The performance begins in the recognizable world of theater and personal narrative, then gradually destabilizes into something stranger, funnier, and more theatrical—where sound functions as a scene partner, technology becomes conversational, and performance itself becomes a survival mechanism.

Rather than offering easy answers about AI, trauma, or identity, the work asks:
How do we rebuild coherence after systems fail us?
How do we remain emotionally alive in an age of performance, surveillance, and fragmentation?
And what kinds of play, ritual, and storytelling might help us reconnect to each other again?

Part confessional, part theatrical experiment, and part transformation ritual, this is a performance about becoming visible after surviving disappearance.

About the Artist

Don Allen is a Philadelphia-based performer, theatrical creator, civic artist, and systems thinker whose work explores how human beings build meaning, intimacy, and stability inside increasingly fragmented systems. Emerging from musical theater, improvisation, and live performance — with formative years spent working in Philadelphia, Chicago and Los Angeles — Allen’s practice has evolved into a multidisciplinary body of work spanning theater, music, mythology-driven storytelling, civic repair, visual art, and human-centered AI inquiry.

He is the creator of Mister Don, a theatrical host figure and expanding creative universe that blends communal wonder, ritual, humor, emotional architecture, and surreal Americana to examine how people carry chaos, memory, grief, transformation, and connection. Through performance, music, live experiences, visual storytelling, and conceptual worldbuilding, Allen’s work asks what remains distinctly human in an era increasingly shaped by automation, alienation, spectacle, and algorithmic life.

His broader creative ecosystem includes the solo performance work Human in the Loop; the Mister Don mythology and live-performance universe; multiple original music projects spanning theatrical pop, queer noir, and children’s storytelling; illustrated and narrative-based works; web series development; and ongoing writing and exploration around regulation, imagination, public memory, and human-AI relational dynamics.

Across mediums, Allen’s work consistently centers emotional truth, theatricality, vulnerability, communal experience, and the fragile, often strange act of remaining fully human inside modern systems.
