About the Artist

Karen D. Moore is a Philadelphia-based filmmaker and poet whose work sits at the intersection of identity, beauty, and the untold stories of Black women. Through film, poetry, and visual narrative, she creates work that challenges dominant beauty standards and centers the voices, faces, and experiences that mainstream media has long overlooked.

Her film Who Told You Your Black Is Not Beautiful established her as a bold and necessary voice in documentary filmmaking — a work that asks the question its title poses and demands a reckoning with how Black beauty has been defined, diminished, and reclaimed. Her films do not simply document — they bear witness, celebrate, and insist.

Ink & Melanin: Verse One marks the beginning of a new chapter in Moore's work — an ongoing exploration of the relationship between the written word and melanin, between poetry and skin, between story and the body that carries it. In this poetic narrative documentary, she brings together original poetry, intimate footage, and music to create a film that is at once a love letter and a declaration.

Karen D. Moore believes that art has the power to rewrite the narratives that have diminished us — and that the most revolutionary act is to look at yourself fully, without apology, and say: this is the whole story.
