Creative Dialogues: Poets and Painters / Femmepressionist
Creative Dialogues brings together two innovative multimedia projects that explore the intimate relationship between visual art, poetry, and music. This evening features the collaborative work of two artists, each presenting their unique vision of how different art forms speak to one another across time and medium.
Poets and Painters
This thematic multimedia recital, originally conceived as a degree recital in 2021, weaves together songs inspired by visual masterpieces with their corresponding artworks, creating a rich tapestry of artistic conversation. The program celebrates the creative process across centuries, beginning with Wolf's Michelangelo Lieder—settings of the Renaissance master's translated sonnets paired with his preparatory sketches and studies that would later inform his iconic sculptures and frescoes. Poulenc's "Le travail du peintre" brings to life the works of Picasso, Chagall, Miró, and other modern masters referenced in the song cycle. Selections from Sondheim's "Sunday in the Park With George" celebrate Seurat's pointillist masterpiece "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte," with projections that transition from monochrome to full color, mirroring the musical's exploration of artistic creation. The segment concludes with Matthew Aucoin's Three Whitman Songs, complemented by American artwork that echoes the poet's transcendentalist themes.
Femmepressionist
This performance celebrates the often-overlooked contributions of women artists and composers of the Impressionist era. The program features Lili Boulanger's exquisite song cycle "Clairières dans le ciel" (Clearings in the Sky), juxtaposed with paintings by women Impressionist artists working in France during the same period, illuminating the parallel creative voices of women who were forging new artistic paths in both visual and musical expression.
Throughout both performances, song texts
