Liberty City Arts Presents “My Place of Clear Water”

A reference to the opening line of Seamus Heaney’s poem, Anahorish, the “first hill in the world where springs washed into the shiny grass,” My Place of Clear Water is a love letter you’re welcome to read.

In this concert, music by Missy Mazzoli, Kate Soper, Tom Cipullo, and Jake Heggie, weaves together historic and contemporary poets Hildegard von Bingen, John Milton, Emily Dickenson, and Laura Morefield, among others. Performer and singer Rachel DiBlasio follows the thread of the text as she examines connection to place, to body, to the cycle of seasons (birth and decay), and to the shelters we build inside our own hearts. The poetry sung in this recital is DiBlasio’s vehicle for this exploration. In the words of Tyler Ballgame, “I can only sing what I feel.”

My Place of Clear Water is performed by cellist Tom Kraines, mezzo-soprano Rachel DiBlasio, sopranos Megnot Toggia and Melanie Culhane, accompanied by piano. This performance is sung in English, French, and Latin. Lyric books and translations are provided.

About the Artist

Mezzo Soprano Rachel DiBlasio is a singing-actor interested in art as the mirror in which we both see ourselves as we are and as we wish to become. DiBlasio is invested in contemporary opera-theater work, cross-genre collaboration,
and ensemble driven artistic processes. Prior roles include Amy Lowell (The Sisters, cover) Polyxo (Here Be Sirens), Annina (La Traviata), Dorabella (Cosi fan tutte, cover), Zona (Earth Girls Named Molly), Gerry (Non Motus), Meg (Little Women), Cherubino (Le nozze di Figaro), and Penelope (Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria). DiBlasio has previously won the overall curation prize in Opera MODO's aria competition, been selected as one of the 24 finalists in the Rochester International Vocal Competition, and holds degrees from Temple University and Westminster Choir College.
