Liberty City Arts Presents
Sketches of a love story: a sapphic retelling of the Italienisches liederbuch
In this new presentation of the Italienisches Liederbuch, singers Madison Boyer (soprano) and Amanda Staub (mezzo-soprano) have reconfigured Wolf’s set of 46 short songs into a narrative, depicting two people falling in and out of love. Paired with figure drawings by local Philadelphia sketch artists, the performers bring the audience into the trajectory of a relationship, from its playful beginning to its tragic end.
Hugo Wolf composed the 46 songs of the Italienisches Liederbuch from the translated texts of short, anonymous Italian poems. The cycle has a unique performance history, being sung as a solo piece, as duets between soprano and baritone, in order, or rearranged to construct a narrative.
