Growing up with two moms was magical for Elle. They witnessed what it was like to proudly love who you love. The world, however, doesn’t always regard queer love as magical, leaving queer families under a vulnerable microscope of critique. Elle struggled with “poster child syndrome,” or the pressure to have a perfect gay family, their whole life. When Elle’s parents separated, something broke.
Mommy & Momma or The Queerspawn Play embodies the pride of having two moms while navigating grief in the wake of divorce. Through the course of the play, Elle is forced to answer a question: can they still be proud of their family and wave their rainbow flag in the midst of their moms’ separation? What does it mean for the rainbow flag to suddenly turn gray?
In this irreverent, thought-provoking piece about family and pride, Elle is brutally confronted with the shame and sadness of their family’s past; learning what it truly means to build and rebuild a family. Mommy & Momma or The Queerspawn play is an abstract retelling of Elle’s experience, closely based on playwright Em Harnett’s life.
Queerspawn stories are often overlooked and at times where our families continue to be in danger. We believe it is important to elevate these stories. Our team of all queer folks includes Lisi Levy (Co-Producer), Maddie Breske (Co-Producer), Chaz T. Martin (Director) and Em Harnett (Playwright and Actor). Come giggle through grief and experience the joy of Mommy & Momma or The Queerspawn Play.

Em Harnett is an actor, writer and comedian based in Philadelphia PA. They earned their Acting BFA from Point Park University and are now ~doing the thing~. Their work is inspired by their experience being queer and having queer parents or what we call being second gen queerspawn. Em has performed most notably at 54 Below (NYC), Punch Line Philly, The Fillmore and Comedy Sportz. They are accompanied by a team of stellar queer philly theater artists and makers: Producers, Maddie Breske (Producer at The Strides Collective) and Lisi Levy (Artistic Associate at Quintessence Theatre Group) and Director, Chaz T.
