This is a split bill performance between Canzonieri Dance Collective and Bart.Co Dance Company. "Fragmentation" and "Phase 1" come together to talk about the complex concepts of distress, grief, and reflection. These dance performances help cope with the emotional strain of our environments.

“Fragmentation” is a story-book, with scenes of isolation, pain, abuse, and self-realization. Flipping through the pages is coming to terms with the reality of your environment, grieving what you are becoming, and starting the work to do all you can to break the cycle. Through a 30-minute dance performance, we are learning from the grief so we don’t become a product of our environment and disrupt the pattern for ourselves. Comprising of six chapters, the dancers are narrating: “fear of isolation”, “fear of home”, “fear of going to sleep”, “exhaustion catching up”, “the breakdown”, and “how do we break the cycle?”.

For the unforeseable future, women and the marginalized will have to deal with the effects of the results from the 2025 presidential election. The daily stages of grief can feel like a singular process, but through the medium of dance, this will be a collective effort to help cope with the war waged on people’s human rights. Current events, personal experiences, and internal emotions were used to create “Phase 1”, a 20-minute dance performance that highlights the first two stages of grief to convey our disappointment and disdain for the future that we have been thrust into. The piece showcases rage and numbness through vigorous and athletic movement. This is only a part of a larger evening-length piece, "mindFUCK", coming in 2027.

Founded in 2000, the Performance Garage is housed in a historic 19th-century building that was originally a horse stable. Since 2002, the façade and interiors were renovated, and the space was transformed into supportive non-profit dance studios with residencies, educational programs, and a 110-seat dance theater.

About the Artist

Canzonieri Dance Collective, founded by MJ Canzonieri, first debuted at the Spark Theatre Festival in NYC in the fall of 2024 with MJ's solo work 'Vexation'; from there, Canzonieri Dance Collective has performed across more venues in NYC, such as Dixon Place and Chain Theater. They have also performed at The Roxey Ballet River Dance Festival 2025, our own Canzonieri Dance Collective Choreographic Showcase hosted in November 2025 at Rutgers University, Art House FOCUS College Spotlight Showcase, and Creative Performances Fast Forwards Series at Dixon Place Theater.

Leigha Bartko is a New Jersey-based dance artist. She went to college for a BFA in dance at Rutgers University. They have worked with artists such as Ani Javian, John Evan, Kun-Yang Lin, Andrea Zachery, and many more. She was awarded The Margery J. Turner Choreography Award through Rutgers University for their thesis. Leigha currently has a space fellowship with the studio, Washington Rock Dance, for their company, “Bart.Co Dance”. We use personal experiences as well as political and human rights issues as a source to create reflective work. Bart.Co has performed all over the tri-state area at venues such as Dixon Place, Performance Garage, Alvin Ailey, and many more. Our most notable performance, 2025 Fringe Arts Festival 'Through The Eyes of a Woman', was the company’s first evening-length show.
