"Ritual of Identity" is a new evening-length dance work presented by Prakriti Dance. This work is centered around the idea of rituals and how they shape our identity and community. These cultural practices connect us to one another and help those with immigrant experiences find commonalities in life. This work is an original choreography of Kasi Aysola (Artistic Director, Prakriti Dance) & Archana Raja (Choreographic Assistant, Prakriti Dance).
"Ritual of Identity" will explore universal rituals of birth, life, death & prayer through the lens of India culture while connecting them to shared human experiences. The work will draw on dance, music, theater, and poetry to offer a multidisciplinary performance that speaks across boundaries.
This piece was born out of choreographer, Kasi Aysola's, personal experience around death and how rituals are believed to help the soul ascend to the spiritual realm. In moments of loss and grief inspiration arose from the awareness of how rituals, whether sacred or secular, mark the transitions of life and offer us solace, healing and grounding. Rituals help us feel a sense of belonging. For diasporic people in particular, they are a bridge between past and present, traditional and contemporary, home and abroad.
