Coming from its world premiere at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Roadkill Bambi is a new show about how we make decisions while caught in the headlights of unavoidable disaster.

Portia is driving home from a wedding with her girlfriend Alison when they hit a deer. Portia dies. Then the accident happens again. And again. And again. Trapped in an absurd time loop, challenging secrets are revealed and Portia must reimagine what a future with Alison looks like, ask if she wants that future, all while it seems like The Future (in a metaphysical sense) might not even exist anymore. Whatever keeps you up at night– growing far-right facism in the west or the climate crisis; divorce or death– humans are constantly staring down endings and grieving for futures we envisioned but will never live. Roadkill Bambi a surreal dirge for these imagined futures. Featuring scientific lecture, vaporwave music, and a chain-smoking deer, this play is a Groundhog Day for the 2020s.

Written by Mal MacKenzie during a bout of debilitating eco-anxiety, Roadkill Bambi captures the grief of a generation promised technological prosperity who must now plan for a future that is already dead. It does not, however, bend to nihilism. Instead, this play asks how we take action towards a better tomorrow, even when we had something else in mind.
