Soseul Dawon: The Stark Garden of Presence

When we shut out seeing and hearing, what does the body begin to sense, feel and express?

Soseul Dawon, meaning solitude in a quiet garden in Korean, is a movement laboratory that interrogates the paradox of sensory deprivation. When sight and sound are shut out, how does the body respond? Does the body, bereft of those navigational tools, feel diminished, or lose it way? Does it compensate through heightened senses elsewhere? Is somatic sensitivity amplified as a result of quieting distractions channeled through eyes and ears? What can we learn from this investigation about the capacities of our skin, facia, muscles and bones to sense and engage with their environment, and stimulate imagination and expression? What lessons can we derive about communicating with other-abled people?

Through five experimental dialogs stretched over two weekends, a movement researcher and a musician will challenge themselves and one another to retreat from the familiarity of sightedness and hearing, and probe their bodies’ inherent sensory capacity. How does music vibrate the environment for someone who can’t hear it? Might they find sensory availability that sight and sound disrupt? Might they locate a level of exquisite feeling that would make them choose to go blind or deaf for a week, or even a single day?
