In the small town of Bakersfield, beloved local baker Joe faces financial trouble despite his generous heart—he’s spent too much buying homes for friends and family. His last hope lies in winning the prestigious Pie Making Contest, which offers a $1 million prize and the title of Best Baker in New York. Confident in his pies, Joe prepares for the contest, but disaster strikes: his pies are mysteriously ruined with salt.
Joe’s friends—tech-savvy Lucy, loyal Ronald, and outspoken Roxanne—rally to solve the mystery. Security footage reveals several suspicious figures, including Mrs. Rainbow Friend, the eccentric pet store owner; Officer Bob, a reformed ex-criminal; and Sam, a former classmate with a mean streak and a rival bakery. Each suspect is investigated in a comedic, clue-filled adventure across town—from pet stores to police stations.
The Great Bakersfield Pie Mystery is a heartfelt and hilarious whodunit that blends friendship, justice, and community. With colorful characters and fast-paced action, it serves up a slice of classic small-town charm—with extra whipped cream and a dash of salt. Written by Sawubona Creativity Project playwriting students ages 5-9.
