I am a Black Sis-Gender Woman, an Artist and a Senior Citizen. I graduated from Temple University with a Major in Early Childhood Education and a minor in Liberal Arts. After 34+ years of teaching and other leadership roles, I retired. I enjoyed teaching immensely. I was born in Agusta, GA, during Segregation and overt racial discrimination. We lived in poverty, but as a kid, I didn’t notice. There was no indoor plumbing. We had an outhouse, and so did everybody in our community. My mother was a fantastic cook and a singer. She had a strong, deep, bluesy, Mahalia Jackson, Dinah Washington alto quality in her voice. That tender voice would fill up the house, especially when she plaited my hair. Gender roles were clearly defined in our home. My father told great stories about our Kushite African ancestors. He also told stories about our Indigenous American ancestors, Seminole Warriors and Shamans. Sometimes, my father and one of my older brothers would compete against each other in storytelling. All of their stories were filled with magic, powerful villains, heroes and exciting adventures. When my father wasn’t telling stories, he would challenge us to an art contest or have us make up our own stories. Sometimes, without notice, he would come in from work and dare us to beat him in short and distant races. He motivated us in other sports too. I think those childhood memories inspired me to become creative. I began singing with an adult gospel group when I was around seven. We traveled up and down the east coast performing for big and small church crowds. As time went on, I began writing poetry, and trying other artistic genres. I published a book, "A Small Candlelight Between The Darkness, " some years ago. I followed up with a smaller 2nd edition a few years ago. The book is based on a true story about the inequity in the Criminal Justice and Prison Systems. I received tremendous praise from countless readers. I sold thousands of copies. I have performed as an acto
