About the Artist

True Dance is a small Integrated Dance collective in Northwest Philadelphia, artistically directed by Sophonisba Jarka-Sellers. (Integrated Dance is made by dancers with and without disabilities working together as social and artistic equals. It rests on the understanding that different kinds of bodies and different kinds of minds offer different aesthetic opportunities.) Sophy believes that True Dance can bring something to Philadelphia that isn’t yet here, and that audiences will find it exciting. She is building a community of dancers that is committed to accepting all kinds of difference and communicating about how to draw on their unique resources in order to make a new kind of art.
Sophonisba Jarka-Sellers' Artistic Vision: I am interested in using theatrical elements to communicate narrative ideas in the abstract language of dance. How can we convey the emotional content of a narrative, if not its literal plot line? I want to give full rein to whimsy and imagination but in a way that treats deep issues in human life in a coherent way. I want to be honest about pain but also not afraid to talk about what we love most. Dancing about what we love and how it moves us doesn’t have to be naïve or sentimental. This idea rules out too much of human experience as a legitimate subject for art.
