Spencer Boyce on Noam Osband
Hi Noam!
When I was first assigned your show as my Philly Fringe Postcard, I had no idea the ride it would end up taking me on. From being greeted by giant moths as I entered the venue to hearing the dulcet tones of an accordion as you entered the stage, I knew I was in for a treat. Starting your show off by telling the audience that we’re all here to embrace the silly is what made me immediately fall in love with your piece. I think silliness is a much-overlooked necessity, so thank you for making a piece that celebrates it. Obviously, the songs are hilarious and catchy, and I’ll be humming the title track for weeks to come. But I was surprised by just how much I learned during the show as well! Examining love and human connection through these bizarre stories made the messaging digestible, comprehensible, and exciting. Who knew it could be so fun to dissect how you approach love?!
The main emotion I felt after leaving your show, however, was inspiration. You’ve created such a solid, airtight piece with projections, music, and comedy that all work so well together. My show, Impersonator, is my first crack at a piece that incorporates all of these elements. Seeing an artist present a piece that they’ve crafted so well inspired me deeply.
Sitting in that room, with dozens of audience members strewn throughout the venue, laughing along to these silly songs reminded me why I love Fringe so much in the first place, and why I was so excited to get involved in this project. When producing your own show and dealing with marketing, budgeting, and all the things that make self-producing so exciting, it can be hard to remember the essence of Fringe. And Wikipedilove felt like a love letter to the culture and community that Fringe creates.
I’m so glad I got to see your piece! Thank you for creating such a fun night at the theatre, embracing love and silliness, which are two traits I think are absolutely vital today.
Signed,
Spencer Boyce
