Asian Arts Initiative Storefront
Philadelphia
Connecting cultural expression and social change, Asian Arts Initiative uses art as a vehicle to explore the diverse experiences of all communities which include Asian Americans. Located in Philadelphia’s Chinatown North, Asian Arts Initiative is a multidisciplinary arts center offering exhibitions, performances, artist residencies, youth workshops, and a community gathering space. Here, all of us can view and create art that reflects our lives, and think critically, creatively about the future we want to build for our communities. Located in Philadelphia’s Chinatown North neighborhood, Asian Arts Initiative is a multidisciplinary arts center where all people — across experience and skill levels, age, race, and class backgrounds — can view and create art that reflects our lives, as well as think critically and creatively about the future we want to build for our communities. Our multi-tenant arts facility, built in 1906, first served as a film screening and storage house for Duquesne Amusement & Supply Co (owned by the three eldest of the Warner Brothers), before later being converted into a medical supply depot for the Great Influenza epidemic of 1918-20. With a storied history throughout the 20th Century, today it serves as a resource for the broader cultural community, with individual artist studios as well as organizational and program space — including room for workshops and meetings; gallery and exhibition areas; and a black-box-style theater. Our building community is comprised of long-term and short-term tenants: mission-aligned service and arts organizations, artists, community groups, and more.
Note: There is a bus stop for routes 23 and 45 at the corner of 12th and Vine, right down the block. It is also about a 10 minute (0.5mi) walk north from Jefferson Station. Street parking varies between metered, time-restricted, or both. There are unmetered, unrestricted spots along Wood St just north of us, but those spots are rarely available or plentiful due to their desirability. Temporary construction barriers in front of the building on Vine St should not be moved to accommodate parking. There are pay-to-park surface lots located at SW corner of 12th & Vine, SE corner of 13th & Vine, and East side of 13th, between Callowhill & Hamilton.
